The 5 Worst Stephen King Movies Ever Made

Horror author Stephen King may have sold over 350 million books, but many of the film adaptations of his works just plain stink. That brings us to the worst Stephen King movies, a collection of the ill-advised, poorly written, and downright ridiculous. Please keep in mind that I'm not disputing King's literary prowess, as he often has little to do with these projects once he's sold the film rights.

The Worst Stephen King Movies Ever MadeDreamcatcher (2003) - Despite alien creatures exploding from people's rectums, this tale of extraterrestrial invaders and deranged military forces fails to pack a punch. Morgan Freeman shows off some outrageous eyebrows, and Donnie Wahlberg is unintentionally hilarious as the mentally challenged boy nicknamed "Duddits." And who knew that our subconscious looked like a cluttered library?

Thinner (1996) - When a fat scumbag lawyer (Robert John Burke) runs over a gypsy woman with his car, her vengeful father curses him to drop weight faster than the Subway guy. And to further compound the silliness, the lawyer turns to his pals in the underworld to help resolve the crisis. The plot is the thinnest thing of all in this cinematic dud.

Sleepwalkers (1992) - Despite cameos from Stephen King, Clive Barker, Mark Hamill, and John Landis, this tale of werecats stalking a hot high school student (Madchen Amick) in California elicits more yawns than scream of terror. Oddly enough, the bane of a werecat's existence turns out to be...cats.

Maximum Overdrive (1986) - Despite a great soundtrack from AC/DC, this tale of inanimate objects coming to life and killing humans is a real clunker. Emilio Estevez tries to keep a straight face throughout, and King (who directed) would later admit to being high on cocaine during most of the production. Thanks to the critical panning of the film, he vowed to never direct again.

The Lawnmower Man (1992) - King's original short story involved a satyr who mowed a man's yard and ended up sacrificing him to the god Pan. The movie has almost nothing in common, except for the fact that Jeff Fahey plays Jobe Smith, a mentally challenged guy who mows yards for a living. Pierce Brosnan plays the scientist who uses virtual reality to up Jobe's intellect. Before you know it, sweet and simple Jobe has been replaced with a cyber tyrant. King ended up suing the filmmakers in order to have his name taken off the picture. For that reason (among others), it makes our list of the worst Stephen King movies.

For the time being, that concludes our list of the worst Stephen King movies. But King is still out there writing best-selling novels, which means another stinker might be just around the corner. Stay tuned.
